In post-war France, the itinerary of this humanist follows that of a generation of «reporters-illustrators», stimulated by a flourishing press and the dynamic commissions of state organizations, the book explores particularly the period 1958-19581970 with four main axes, the Algerian War, the Berlin Wall, the country of former French Africa, speeches and visits by General de Gaulle to France in the 1960s.

Léon Herschtritt, a singular photographic writing to capture the essence of the world

“Any photographer can one day make a beautiful photograph, but how many will show an atmosphere, a world, an event or a man.”

Léon Herschtritt

In a France marked by the end of the colonial wars and already engaged in the economic leap of the Trente Glorieuses, Léon Herschtritt (1936-2020) began his career as a photographer in 1956, influenced by the «poetic realism» of the humanist current. On an official mission, Herschtritt covered the tumultuous weeks of May and June 1958 in Algeria, when General de Gaulle was recalled to power and pronounced his famous «I understood you!». Léon Herschtritt looks at the ups and downs of current events, in particular at how history is changing individual life paths. Back in France, he aroused interest with his report devoted to the «kids of Algeria», offering the face of a youth turned towards the future off-camera images of attacks and ambushes. In 1960, aged 24, Léon Herschtritt won the Prix Niépce.
